Re-Create Image: project 1

"Back Catalogue"

Original:

The Pink Floyd "Back Catalogue" is a famous image known world wide. After alot of research I found that the photographer for this image was unkown but on my last source found a photo credit to a man name Tony May in London 1995. Credit of this image is also given to Phyllis Cohen for his precise and detailed paintings, and Tony Harlow for creating the idea for the altogether image. I chose this image because it is one of my favorite images and posters. I have wanted to recreate it for years, and this was the perfect opportunity.
Many would come to think there were misogynistic intentions when creating this image but the by having the images directly painted to the flesh they followed the curces and reflected the lighting as if it were really there, which it was. It gave the image surreal properties. Originally Harlow had an idea of having both nude men and women on he side of the swimming pool, but then decided to just choose one gender. He chose women because the curves of their bodies appeared to be more visually elegent and more gave a more sensitive feel.

To me the image creates an attachment to the music created by Pink Floyd. It highers the level of just a fan, it is more of a follower of what they stand for, and what their music really evokes. To recreate this image I needed five models. I really tried to focus and imidate exactly as the models in the original peice looked like. I had to gain access to the University Plaza Hotel, as well as a banquet room in Indianapolis. I plan on printing this and having my own "poster" of it in my home, maybe along side the original?

Original:

"Hangers" Sandy Skoglund 1979

"Hangers" is one of many peices in Skoglund's "The Artificial Mirror" exhibit. The original image in displayed at the Paciarte Gallery in Brescia, Italy. All of Skoglund's images are compltely created from scratch, and at life-size scale if not larger.
"Hangers" as well as most of Skoglund's work contains a vast amount of repetition. It shows a huge amount of visual interest and is the reason i chose her work. Her work has such repetition and a surreal feel to it, it is sometimes difficult to realize the the meaning behind the visual interest, if there is one.
What i took from this image is that we often look past what we see everyday. How many hangers do we have in our homes? We never really think about these things. If you took them all out of your closet, they would probably fill a room like this.
When I recreated the image I did not only want to imitate Skoglund's use of a bright color scheme and repetition, but I wanted to focus on something that we are around so much through out our normal day lives. I thought about how many words and letters are being sent digitally everyday and i figured i would fill a room with lettters, the way Skoglund did with hangers.
Skoglund's images are lifesize. My image is 3 images fused together. The background (room) is actaully a box that I photographed the inside of. I had 2 models.
I believe that the world is getting lost in digital messaging. Speaking through messages takes away from personal bonding that is so necessary for everyone having conversations. I really wanted to focus on how much speaking real words is a necessity to our culture.

  1. I really like both of your images. The first image is really amazing to me because it took so much effort. I think the way that you chose your models and posed them were right on with the other image. The background of the image although more modern than the original image, works really well. The image was done very well and has the exact same feeling as the original image. The only thing that bugs me about the image is the way that the images are blended into the models body. Some of them are choppy and not as smooth as the original.

The second image that you recreated was also really good. I like the way that you started with a cardboard box and put all of the different things into the image to make up a whole image. I also like how you made the concept of your image about texting which is so prevalent in today's society. The contrasting colors of the image make the letters stand out and be the main focus of the image.

Overall I think both your images were done really well and I really liked them. Good job!!
